What it is
A phakic intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens implanted inside the eye without removing your natural lens — “phakic” means the natural lens stays in place. It works like a permanent contact lens placed inside the eye, usually just behind the iris (the coloured part of the eye). It can correct high short-sight and astigmatism.
Who it's for
Adults with stable glasses power, often high power, or whose corneas are too thin for laser vision correction. Measurements of the eye, including the space inside the front of the eye, decide whether a phakic IOL is suitable.
What to expect
The lens is inserted through a small opening under local anaesthesia, usually one eye at a time. The procedure is normally done as day-care, and you go home the same day with someone to accompany you.
Recovery
Many people notice clearer vision within a day or two. You will use prescribed eye drops for some weeks and attend follow-up visits, which include checks of the eye pressure. Avoid rubbing the eye and follow your doctor's advice about work, travel and exercise.
