Entropion Repair

Entropion repair corrects an eyelid that turns inward, so the lashes stop rubbing against the eye and causing pain, redness and damage.

What it is

Entropion is when the eyelid — usually the lower lid — turns inward, so the eyelashes rub against the surface of the eye. It causes irritation, watering, redness and a feeling of something in the eye, and it can scratch or infect the cornea. Causes include age-related loosening of the eyelid and scarring from infection or injury. Surgery turns the eyelid back to its normal position.

Who it's for

People with an inward-turning eyelid, especially if the lashes are irritating or scratching the eye.

What to expect

The surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia as day-care, and you go home the same day.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising usually settle within one to two weeks. You will apply prescribed ointment, and any skin stitches are usually removed after about a week. Relief from the rubbing lashes is often felt soon after surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just have the eyelashes removed?

Pulling out lashes gives only short-term relief, because they grow back. Correcting the eyelid position treats the cause.
