What it is
Ectropion is when the lower eyelid sags and turns outward, away from the eye. The inner surface of the lid is exposed and tears do not drain properly, causing watering, redness, dryness and irritation. It is most often due to age-related loosening of the eyelid, but it can also follow facial nerve weakness, scarring or growths on the lid. Surgery tightens and repositions the eyelid.
Who it's for
People whose outward-turning eyelid causes troublesome watering or irritation, or puts the front of the eye at risk of damage.
What to expect
The surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia as day-care, and you go home the same day.
Recovery
Swelling and bruising usually settle within one to two weeks. You will apply prescribed ointment, and any skin stitches are usually removed after about a week.
Frequently asked questions
Can eye drops fix ectropion?
Lubricating drops can ease the symptoms, but they do not correct the position of the eyelid. Surgery is the lasting treatment.
